![]() Moreover, mixed plantations significantly increased the activity of alkaline phosphatase and the content of soil available phosphorus, suggesting that afforestation with M. glyptostroboides and B. polycarpa is an effective way to alleviate phosphorus deficiency in urban forests in Shanghai, China. Overall, results from this study indicated that fungal and archaeal communities were more sensitive to aboveground tree species than bacterial community. However, ANOSIM analysis of bacterial communities showed that there was no significant group separation among different plantations. A similarity analysis (ANOSIM) showed that mixed plantation significantly altered the community composition of archaea and fungi, accompanied with an increase of alkaline phosphatase activity. No significant difference was found in the abundance and diversity of bacterial and archaeal community among the three studied plantations. Moreover, fungal abundance was positively correlated with the content of soil available phosphorus. ![]() We found higher fungal abundance in the mixed plantation, when compared to both pure plantations. The results showed that soil available phosphorus content in the mixed plantation of M. glyptostroboides and B. polycarpa was significantly higher than that in pure plantations, while no significant difference was observed in the content of soil organic carbon, total and available nitrogen, total and available potassium among the three studied plantations. Here, we evaluated soil chemical properties, abundances and compositions of soil bacterial, archaeal, and fungal communities, and enzyme activities in pure and mixed Metasequoia glyptostroboides and Bischofia polycarpa plantations, located in Shanghai, China. Although soil microbes play crucial roles in regulating soil biogeochemical processes, little is known about how mixed plantations affect soil microbial communities, including bacteria, archaea, and fungi. Mixed plantations are considered to improve soil quality because they can stimulate organic matter cycling and increase soil carbon and nutrient content. Soil degradation has been found in urban forests in Shanghai, especially in the pure plantations. Tom also channeled his devotion to research into a passion for teaching. Tom also served on Committee A of the Association of American University Professors from 1993 to 1996, which takes action on that organization’s most basic purpose: the defense of academic freedom. Tom played a central role in developing the faculty-run process for addressing severe sanctions against Rice faculty, including terminations. For more than a decade, he challenged the place of athletics at Rice, which also involved deeper questions about the university’s admissions practices and its allocation of funds. In all of these roles, Tom was not afraid to make people uncomfortable by raising difficult questions. As a member of Rice’s faculty, Tom served as chair of the Department of History, as speaker of the Faculty Council, and as the director of the university’s Center for the Study of Cultures (now Humanities Research Center). ![]() He was a founding member of the Intellectual History Group, which now publishes the journal Modern Intellectual History. Tom was an invaluable citizen of the community of scholars. This essay also lent its title to the collection of Tom’s writings published by the Johns Hopkins University Press in 1998. This commitment was perhaps best expressed in an essay from 1990, “Objectivity Is Not Neutrality: Rhetoric Versus Practice in Peter Novick’s That Noble Dream,” which offered a defense of the search for truth, regardless of consequences, and argued that this search, properly understood, need not slight moral concerns. Underlying all of Tom’s arguments was a commitment to put the search for truth first. Tom also took on arguments that viewed the anti-slavery movement as a functional defense of capitalism, suggesting instead that anti-slavery campaigns primarily originated out of a humanitarian ethos that gestated in free-market capitalism. It was piece that set him at odds with some feminist historians, whom he criticized for putting political goals above historical truth. In an article (co-authored with Sanford Levinson) from the 1980s, Tom criticized the reliance on statistics to make a case for a history of discrimination in a landmark class action suit against Sears regarding women’s employment. His sharp, critical interventions continued in other arenas. It was as a contributor to the New York Review of Books that Tom made his first mark in scholarship, writing a critique of Robert Fogel and Stanley Engerman’s Time on the Cross in 1974 and offering his assessment of the debate sparked by the book in 1975. His dissertation, later published as The Emergence of Professional Social Science: The American Social Science Association and the Nineteenth-Century Crisis of Authority, continues to be cited today. Certainly, the snowy winters of 1783-85 were two of the coldest Scottish winters of recent centuries. ![]() The eruption of Mt Tambora in Indonesia during April 1815 is a famous example, often referred to as “the year without a summer”.įrom the perspective of past climate in Scotland, scientists have long debated whether the succession of cold winters that followed were a direct result of the Laki volcanic eruptions. In effect, a very dilute form of sulphuric acid was circulating across the lower part of the Earth’s atmosphere during the summer of 1783 and it proved very difficult to shift.Ĭlimate scientists have long known that major volcanic eruptions often emit enormous volumes of volcanic ash into the atmosphere and have the effect of blocking the Sun’s radiation and cooling the Earth’s climate. These gas compounds were then transported by prevailing winds across northern and central Europe. The sulphur that was released into the Earth’s atmosphere reacted with moisture in the air to produce sulphate aerosols. The Laki eruption threw columns of smoke and ash between nine and 13 kilometres into the atmosphere, with individual eruptions of flood lava taking place along a very large fissure in the Earth’s crust and continuing for almost nine months. Alastair Dawson, Author provided Impact on weather The weather noted in the estate diary of Gordon Castle in November 1783, six months after the Laki eruption in Iceland. In our research we unearthed several undiscovered diaries and daily weather records for Scotland to reconstruct the patterns of weather and climate change that took place both before, during and following the eruption of the Laki volcano. Until now, apart from the Scots Magazine report a month after the eruption, the only published report was a brief reference from nearly a century ago of volcanic ash having fallen across parts of Caithness in 1783. What was always puzzling was that there was virtually no information known for Scotland during this time. Throughout the summer, reports were widespread from many countries of thousands of people dying from respiratory illnesses. Famines recorded as far away as Egypt and Japan have been attributed to Laki, while it has even been claimed that crop failures in Europe contributed to the outbreak of the French Revolution.īy the middle of July the choking haze had enveloped most of Europe. Later, 1783 came to be known in Gaelic as Bliadhne nan Sneachda Bhuidhe or “the year of the yellow snow”. ![]() News did not reach Scotland for several weeks, when the first brief account was published in the July issue of The Scots Magazine. For comparison, the eruptions of 1783 were ten times the size of Iceland’s 2010 volcanic eruption of Eyjafjallajokull, which resulted in an aviation shutdown across Europe. ![]() It not only released large volumes of volcanic ash into the atmosphere but also enormous amounts of sulphur dioxide aerosols – over 120 megatons according to some estimates. As the world learned later, it was probably one of the largest outpourings of lava in the past 1,000 years, spewing out 42 billion tonnes of molten rock. What these people didn’t know was that on June 8, there had been a huge volcanic eruption at Laki in Iceland. In Aberdeenshire, Janet Burnet was recording in her farming diary how the leaves of her crops were withering and turning yellow, while on the estate of Henry, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch near Edinburgh, daily weather conditions were being measured with a thermometer, barometer and rain gauge. At Gordon Castle in Morayshire, similar descriptions appear in an estate diary. Across Scotland, others were describing similar patterns of weather. ![]() ![]() Your bill (like this sample electric bill) might show a different term such as “transmission fee” or something similar, but the impact on your electricity bill remains the same.
